A UN official called on the United Nations Climate Summit (COP 29), which kicks off today, Monday, to take urgent climate action to ensure that displaced communities are not left behind, stressing that climate change is a major cause of displacement in Yemen.
“Climate change and instability are displacing families in and outside Yemen,” said Marine Den Kaddomkaj, the UNHCR representative in Yemen, in a post on the X platform, monitored by the editor of “Yemen Youth Net.”
He explained that the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, "supports the most affected people by providing shelter, money and protection."
Kajdomkaj called on those gathered at COP29 to take urgent climate action to ensure that displaced communities are not left behind.

Yemen ranks third in the world after Somalia and South Sudan among the countries most vulnerable to climate change and least prepared for shocks, according to UN estimates.
A recent report issued by the United Nations Population Fund ( UNFPA ) revealed that more than 471,000 people were displaced in Yemen during the first ten months of this year, due to the ongoing and escalating conflict and natural disasters caused by climate change.
The United Nations Climate Summit (COP 29) will kick off in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku, on Monday, with the participation of heads of state and government from around the world, companies active in the field of traditional and renewable energy, and organizations concerned with combating climate change.
According to the United Nations, the main goal of this year's meeting in Azerbaijan is to agree on how to get more money to the poorest countries to help them limit global warming and deal with climate change.
COP29 is the world's most important meeting on climate change, led by the United Nations. COP stands for "Conference of the Parties," meaning the nearly 200 countries that have ratified a treaty called the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change).
