A recent report issued by the United Nations Population Fund ( UNFPA ) revealed that more than half a million people have been displaced in Yemen since the beginning of the year, due to the ongoing and escalating conflict and natural disasters caused by climate change.

The fund said in a report issued on Monday that a total of 72,116 families, comprising 504,812 people, were forced to flee their original areas due to ongoing armed conflict and climate change-related disasters during the period between January and October 2024.

He added that 93% of the total number of people severely affected during the first ten months of this year were displaced due to climate-related crises and disasters, with a number of 67,352 families (471,464 people), while the continuation and escalation of armed conflict was behind the displacement of about 7%, or 4,764 families consisting of 33,348 people.

The report explained that the rapid response mechanism led by it, in cooperation with its partners including the World Food Programme and UNICEF, "has played, since the beginning of the year, a pivotal role in addressing the urgent humanitarian needs resulting from these crises; and providing immediate life-saving assistance to affected people."

He added that during the reporting period, the mechanism reached 62,952 families (440,664 people) with emergency relief, representing 87.3% of the total affected families registered for assistance in 20 affected governorates; including 22% of female-headed households, 21% of the elderly, and 10% of persons with disabilities.

The report indicated that the aid distributed to affected families varied between multi-purpose cash assistance, one-time general food aid, and emergency shelter.
