French authorities have ordered Omar bin Laden, the son of al-Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden, to leave the country over his social media posts, the French interior minister announced Tuesday.

New French Interior Minister Bruno Rotaillon said on the X platform that Omar bin Laden was living in the Orne department in Normandy as the husband of a British citizen.

He added that the decision was taken because "he published comments on social networks in 2023 glorifying terrorism. As a result, the governor of Orne issued an order for (Bin Laden) to leave French territory," noting that "the courts confirmed the legitimacy of this decision, which was taken in the interests of national security."

The minister explained that he had signed a ban preventing Omar bin Laden "from returning to France for any reason," without going into details.

Omar bin Laden, 43, was born in Saudi Arabia, where he spent his early years, and also lived in Sudan and then Afghanistan. He left his father when he was 19 and eventually settled in Normandy, northern France, in 2016, where he specialized in painting.
