It was officially announced on Wednesday that German Thomas Tuchel has been appointed as the new manager of the England national football team. The English Football Association announced that Thomas Tuchel, the former Bayern Munich coach, will take over in early 2025.

The English Football Association confirmed in a statement: "Champions League winner Thomas Tuchel is the new coach of the England national team and will be assisted by English coach Anthony Barry."

Tuchel (51 years old), who replaces Gareth Southgate, who held the position from 2016 to 2024, and Lee Carsley, whose temporary term was extended until the international window in November, is the third foreign coach in the history of the "Three Lions" after the late Swede Sven-Goran Eriksen (2001-2006) and the Italian Fabio Capello (2007-2012).

Tuchel, the former coach of Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea, has a rich record of titles, and the English Football Association hopes to lead him to end a 58-year drought for winning a major tournament, as his last title dates back to the 1966 World Cup on home soil.

However, the move has drawn criticism due to the FA's unwillingness to give a homegrown manager the chance to take over the Three Lions.

"I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England national team," Tuchel, who will be assisted by English coach Anthony Barry, who previously worked with him at Bayern Munich, said in a statement carried by the federation.

“I have always felt a personal connection to the game in this country and it has given me some incredible moments,” he continued. “To have the opportunity to represent England is a huge privilege and the opportunity to work with such a special and talented group of players is very exciting.”

Tuchel's coaching record includes several league titles with PSG and Bayern and the German Cup with Dortmund, but his greatest successes came during his time in England, where he led Chelsea to a Champions League treble just months after taking charge in 2021, and the European Super Cup and Club World Cup with the London club.

The German coach was sacked in September 2022 in a bold move by Chelsea's new ownership group.

Tuchel is tasked with winning titles for the England national team, which under Southgate's leadership reached the European Cup final twice in a row, losing to Italy on penalties in Euro 2020 and Spain in the last edition, in addition to the semi-finals in the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the quarter-finals in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, in the four major tournaments in which it participated.

“We are delighted to appoint Thomas Tuchel, one of the best managers in the world,” said FA chief executive Mark Bullingham.

"Since Gareth's resignation, we have worked through the pool of candidates, interviewed a number of managers and assessed them against these criteria," he continued.

"Thomas was very impressive and stood out for his vast experience and motivation," he added.

Tuchel will inherit a talented generation of players, including the Three Lions' all-time top scorer Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Cole Palmer, in a squad that is a candidate to win the World Cup in 2026.
