Hadhramaut.. Signing of an agreement to implement the restoration and rehabilitation project of the historic city of Shibam

The office of the General Authority for the Preservation of Historic Cities, Shibam Hadhramaut branch, signed an agreement with international organizations working in the field of preserving and protecting cultural heritage, to rehabilitate the historic city of Shibam over a period of three years, with funding from the International Alliance for the Protection of Cultural Heritage in Cases of Conflict and War.  ALIPH .

According to Hassan Aideed, Director General of the General Authority for the Preservation of Historic Cities in Shibam, the project aims to restore 63 of Shibam’s historic buildings, restore the northern palace, and the civil status building, the current headquarters of the Shibam Club, in addition to establishing an ethnographic museum in the southern palace, which is a center for the popular, cultural and creative heritage of the people’s lives in Shibam for decades after some partial restorations were carried out in this palace.

In a statement to the official Saba Agency, Aideed pointed out that the project aims to carry out interventions to rehabilitate the city's infrastructure with its various components, including sewage, water, electricity, communications, and to evaluate the paving in the city of Shibam, which revealed some problems in the city's buildings.

He pointed out that the project will be managed by the Greek Heritage Foundation, which will send specialized experts to the city of Shibam during the project period, which will be implemented over a period of three years. In the first year of the project, the current reality will be studied and evaluated, and project documents will be prepared, followed by the implementation process during the remaining two years of the project’s life.

"Aideed" referred to the support and assistance of the local authority leadership in the governorate, and the cooperation of the local community and civil society organizations in the city of Shibam to bring the project to safety and success in order to serve the local community and preserve the city of Shibam as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Cities.

This project is being implemented due to the damage and risks to which the buildings of Shibam Hadhramaut are exposed due to rainfall and floods.
