An international relief organization revealed, on Sunday, that more than 37,700 people were affected by heavy rains and floods in Al Hudaydah Governorate (western Yemen).
The International Islamic Relief Organization ( Islamic Relief ) said in a recent report: “It is estimated that the heavy rains that hit Al Hudaydah Governorate on August 6 affected more than 37,700 people, while at least 30 others were killed.”
The report added that this disaster caused damage to a number of homes, farms and infrastructure in Hodeidah, "where some of those affected were living in tents that were now swept away by the water, hundreds of people were displaced and the floods also caused power outages."
The organization, which is active in Hodeidah and runs projects in the areas of food, livelihoods, health, water, sanitation and hygiene, confirmed that it is responding to this emergency and distributing essential materials to meet the most urgent needs of the affected people.
The report indicated that there is an acute demand for shelter, food, clean water, sanitation and hygiene, and that the organization is currently working with other agencies to identify the places that most need support with the aim of starting distribution in the coming days.
The floods come a week after heavy rains killed 15 people in the Maqbanah district of Taiz governorate, which also damaged homes and infrastructure, putting further pressure on humanitarian response operations in Yemen, which is already suffering from a severe crisis, displacing tens of thousands of people and severely weakening infrastructure, Islamic Relief said.
