Hezbollah announced on Wednesday the killing of its Executive Council Chairman Hashem Safieddine in an Israeli raid on the southern suburb of the Lebanese capital Beirut about 3 weeks ago.
Hezbollah mourned, in a statement, "the head of the Executive Council, Hashem Safieddine." It said that he "passed to his Lord with the best of his mujahid brothers, satisfied, content, patient and hopeful, in a criminal, aggressive Zionist raid."
Regarding his responsibilities within the party’s ranks, the statement explained that “Safi al-Din spent most of his life serving Hezbollah, the Islamic Resistance, and its society, and over many years of his honorable life he responsibly and competently managed the Executive Council, its various institutions, and its units operating in various fields.”
The party pledged to "continue the path of resistance until achieving its goals of freedom and victory."
On Tuesday evening, the Israeli army confirmed the assassination of Safi al-Din, in an attack launched by its fighter jets on the southern suburb of Beirut on October 3, on what it said was a “Hezbollah intelligence headquarters” in the suburb. At the time, official Hebrew media spoke of estimates indicating the assassination of Safi al-Din, during those raids.
Safieddine is the second most important man in Hezbollah after its Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah, who was assassinated by Israel in late September in an airstrike on Haret Hreik in the Beirut suburbs.
After clashes with factions in Lebanon, including Hezbollah, which began after Israel launched a war of genocide on the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023, Tel Aviv expanded the scope of the genocide since September 23 to include most areas of Lebanon, including the capital Beirut, through air strikes, and also began a ground invasion in the south.
The aggression on Lebanon resulted in a total of 2,546 deaths and 11,862 injuries, including a large number of women and children, in addition to more than 1,340,000 displaced persons. Most of the victims and displaced persons were recorded after September 23, according to Anadolu Agency’s monitoring of official Lebanese data until Tuesday evening.
Every day, Hezbollah responds by launching missiles, drones, and artillery shells targeting military sites, intelligence headquarters, military gatherings, and settlements. While Israel announces some of its human and material losses, military censorship imposes a strict blackout on most of the losses, according to observers.
