Britain...a landslide victory for the Labor Party in the legislative elections
World| 4 July, 2024 - 9:54 PM
An opinion poll showed on Thursday that Keir Starmer will be the next Prime Minister of Britain, with the Labor Party expected to win a large majority in the parliamentary elections and the Conservative Party led by Rishi Sunak suffering an unprecedented loss.
The poll predicted that the Labor Party would win up to 410 seats in the 650-seat parliament, ending 14 years in which the Conservatives led the government.
Sunak's party is expected to get only 131 seats, down from 346 when parliament was dissolved, as voters will punish the Conservatives due to the crisis of the high cost of living, years of instability and internal rivalry that has seen five different prime ministers take over the government since 2016.
In the last six elections, only one opinion poll was wrong, and that was in 2015, when the poll suggested that no party would be able to win a majority, when in fact the Conservatives won it. The official results will appear within the next few hours.
Sunak surprised the country and many members of his party when he called the election earlier than he needed to in May, and the Conservatives trail Labor by about 20 points in the opinion polls.
He had hoped that the gap would narrow, as is always the case in British elections, but the gap did not diminish during a somewhat disastrous campaign.
Although opinion polls indicate there is little enthusiasm for Labor leader Starmer, his simple message that it is time for change appears to have resonated with voters.
Unlike what happened in France, where the far-right National Rally party led by Marine Le Pen made historic gains in the elections that took place last Sunday, frustrated British voters appear to have chosen the left of centre.
