Climate Change Symposium

The Studies and Economic Media Center (SEMC) and the Yemeni Parliamentarians Against Corruption (Yemen PAC) are organizing a digital symposium today, Monday, entitled: “Climate Change: The Implications of the Disaster and Ways to Confront It.”

The symposium, which will be held via Zoom at 10:00 AM, will discuss the implications of climate change on the situation in Yemen, and will provide an assessment of governmental and societal interventions to address these changes. It will also review the challenges of climate adaptation and ways to develop a national strategy for climate adaptation in Yemen.

The symposium will be attended by academics, experts and researchers in the field of environment and climate change, as well as representatives of the Yemeni Ministry of Water and Environment and UN organizations.

In this regard, the head of the Center for Economic Studies and Media, Mustafa Nasr, stressed that the symposium is of great importance in terms of the timing of its convening, which precedes the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP29, which will be held in the middle of next month in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku.

He pointed out that it confirms the center's orientation towards shedding light on environmental and climate issues in Yemen, which it began by announcing the Yemeni Network for Climate Journalism and Energy Transition in November 2023.

For his part, Dr. Abdul Moez Dabwan, Executive Director of Yemen Pack Organization, said that the country, which is experiencing the devastating effects of war, has recently been under the burden of disasters resulting from climate change, as hurricanes and floods have increased in several governorates.

Dabwan noted that these disasters affected thousands of families and destroyed the infrastructure that was already dilapidated due to the war. Hence, it was necessary to mobilize efforts and shed light on the effects of climate change on Yemen and how to confront it officially and societally.

The symposium, which will be attended by government institutions, members of the House of Representatives, Yemeni experts and researchers, local and international civil society organizations, and media representatives, will include keynote speeches on the legislative structure of climate and the efforts and roles of local authorities, civil society organizations, and the media.
