Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein discussed on Thursday with Washington's envoy to Yemen, Timothy Lenderking, "the ongoing conflict in Yemen and its impact on the population" and international efforts to end it and achieve stability.

This came during a meeting between Hussein and Lenderking, who arrived in Baghdad on an open-ended visit, according to a statement by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry.

The statement said that the meeting "discussed the current situation in Yemen and discussed the humanitarian and political challenges facing the country, while reviewing the effects of the ongoing conflict and its impact on the population."

The two sides also discussed "international and regional initiatives and efforts aimed at stopping the fighting and achieving stability," according to the same statement.

The importance of providing urgent humanitarian assistance to the affected population was emphasized, and current humanitarian projects were reviewed, with a call on the international community to increase support.

The two sides stressed the "need to continue dialogue between all parties, and encourage the international community to support peace efforts in Yemen."

For about two years, Yemen has been witnessing a lull in a war that began about 9 years ago between forces loyal to the government and the Houthi forces that have controlled governorates and cities, including Sanaa, since September 2014.
