Two Yemeni archaeological landmarks in the governorates of Hodeidah and Amran, in the west and north of the country, were damaged due to the heavy rains that have been hitting the country for weeks.

The General Authority for Antiquities and Museums (affiliated with the Houthis) said in a post on its official Facebook page that heavy rains caused severe damage to parts of the ancient Zabid Castle in Al Hudaydah Governorate, western Yemen.

She added that the upper part of the northern facade of the castle was destroyed, and parts of the roofs of the western barracks designated for the Museum of Popular Heritage had fallen.

In a related context, the Authority explained that the rains caused damage to one of the towers on the northern side of the wall of the historic city of Thula in Amran Governorate, north of Sana'a.

The Authority called on the authorities of the two governorates under the control of the Houthi militia to cooperate seriously and urgently with it and provide material support to repair the damage to the two landmarks.

Since last March, Yemen has been witnessing seasonal rains and heavy floods, which increased in severity this August, causing human losses and significant material damage to infrastructure, historic cities, and citizens’ property.
