The United Nations has had to use camels to transport humanitarian aid to thousands of families affected by floods in four governorates in western Yemen.

“Amidst significant access challenges due to damaged roads, the UNFPA-led Rapid Response Mechanism has helped more than 9,340 flood-affected families in Yemen,” the UNFPA said in a post on its X platform on Wednesday.

He added that this aid "has been distributed in the governorates of Al Mahwit , Al Hudaydah , Hajjah and Raymah, since August 2024," noting that the aid is provided "with the support of the United Nations Central Emergency Fund and the European Union."

The UN Fund attached to its publication pictures of camels transporting aid in mountainous areas of Yemen, indicating the difficulty of transporting relief due to the destruction of roads caused by floods.

The Fund said today that the rapid response mechanism led by the United Nations Population Fund has been able to reach more than 65,380 individuals affected by floods in Yemen since the beginning of the rainy season last August until now.

For its part, OCHA stressed the need to support the humanitarian efforts made by organizations, relief workers, volunteers and first responders, and to recognize the role of charitable work in alleviating the suffering of those in need around the world.

Since the beginning of last August, nearly 190 people have died and hundreds have been injured due to floods and thunderstorms in several Yemeni governorates, and more than a quarter of a million people have been affected, especially those living in displacement camps, according to government, Houthi and UN statistics.
