Lahj Governorate, southern Yemen, recorded a 40 percent decrease in the level of fish production in the coastal strip of the governorate compared to last year 2023.

This was stated by the director of the branch of the General Authority for Fisheries in the Gulf of Aden in Lahj Governorate, Ahmed Dhiban, according to what was reported by the Yemeni News Agency “Saba”.

The director of the authority’s branch attributed the reason for this decline to what he called “the official legal ban on the hunting season for the two types of squid and areca.”

He explained that the total sales of fish production for the coastal strip in Lahj Governorate, during the first half of the current year 2024 AD, amounted to 4 billion and 131 million and 200 thousand Yemeni riyals, while the total fish production for the same period amounted to one million and 32 thousand and 800 kilograms.

He stated that the Haraj market of the city of Al-Houta in Lahj, which is dedicated to providing self-sufficiency in fish products for the residents of the city and its neighboring district areas, its financial revenues during the first half of the current year 2024 AD, reached 16 million and 652 thousand and 400 riyals, from the fish imported to the market. From the coast of the Republic, at a rate of 2 percent of the fish sold there.

He pointed out that Al-Houta Market is the only commercial activity affiliated with the Fisheries Authority branch in the governorate currently, and it provides its services to citizens from the Al-Houta, Tuban, Al-Musaimeer, Tur Al-Baha, and Radfan districts.
