The Omani Maritime Security Center told Reuters on Tuesday that the crew of an oil tanker that capsized off the port of Duqm is still missing, a day after the Comoros-flagged tanker was reported to have sunk.

The center stated in a post on the X platform that the tanker’s crew consists of 16 people, including 13 Indians and three Sri Lankans.

The center told Reuters separately that the tanker was still “sunk and capsized.” He did not confirm whether the tanker had stabilized or whether oil or petroleum products on board were leaking into the sea.

Shipping data issued by the London Stock Exchange Group Company showed that the tanker's destination was Aden, Yemen.

Shipping data showed that the ill-fated ship was a 117-meter-long oil products tanker that was built in 2007. Such small tankers are usually used only for short trips.

The official Omani News Agency reported late on Monday that the Omani authorities conducted a search and rescue operation at the scene of the accident in coordination with maritime authorities.

The Port of Duqm is located on the southwestern coast of Oman, near the Sultanate's major oil and gas mining projects, including a major oil refinery that forms part of the vast Duqm Industrial Zone, the largest single economic project in Oman.
