Arsenal, the runner-up in the English Premier League last season, achieved a deserved and valuable victory over its guest Wolverhampton, with two goals to none, on Saturday, at the Emirates Stadium, in the first round of the competition in the new season.
The first half ended with the Gunners leading, translating their advantage with a goal without a response, scored by German Kai Havertz in the 25th minute with a powerful header after a cross pass from his teammate Bukayo Saka.
In the second half, Bukayo Saka added the second goal in the 74th minute, through an individual effort, after he penetrated the penalty area before preparing the ball for himself and shooting a powerful left-footed ball into the net.
Wolverhampton almost reduced the score in the last moments of the match with a wonderful shot from Brazilian Matheus Cunha, but Spanish goalkeeper David Raya brilliantly saved the ball to keep his team's net clean.
In the same round, Brighton beat host Everton 3-0, with goals scored by Japanese Kaoru Mitoma, Danny Welbeck, and Emirati Simon Adingra in the 25th, 56th, and 87th minutes, respectively.
Everton player Ashley Young received a red card in the 66th minute of the match.
Newcastle United beat Southampton 1-0, scored by Brazilian Joelinton in the 45th minute, despite the team's numerical deficit after Swiss defender Fabian Schar was sent off in the 28th minute.
Nottingham Forest tied with its guest, Bournemouth, with a goal for each. The home team took the lead through the New Zealander Christopher Wood in the 24th minute, and the Ghanaian Antoine Semenyo equalized for the guests in the 86th minute.
