Doctors Without Borders International intends to end its surgical services in the temporary capital, Aden (southern Yemen), by the end of this year, while continuing to provide its services in the epidemiological field.

The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health and Population, Dr. Abdul Raqeeb Al-Haidari, said on Monday that Doctors Without Borders “notified the Ministry of its decision to end the activities of the Surgical Trauma Center in Aden by the end of 2024, based on the organization’s assessment of emergency and future needs.”

He added in an explanatory statement on the X platform, "The organization will continue to support Yemen by shifting its activity from surgical services to epidemiological activities."

Undersecretary Al-Haidari categorically denied the news circulating about the Ministry’s request that the organization end its work in Yemen, stressing the Ministry’s appreciation for the great efforts made by Doctors Without Borders since the beginning of its operations.

The Yemeni health official also reaffirmed his ministry's "commitment to cooperate with all international organizations to ensure the continued provision of health care to citizens."

It is noteworthy that the organization had previously announced on its social media platforms that its teams would perform 26,935 surgical operations in the governorates where it is located inside Yemen, during the year 2023 AD, including 8,084 surgical operations in its trauma hospital in Aden.
