Cholera outbreak in Taiz

Health authorities in Taiz Governorate have recorded 7,306 cholera cases and 48 deaths since the beginning of this year.

The districts of Sabr, Jabal Habashi and the governorate centre are areas infected with cholera, with high rates of infection, according to a medical source.

Hospitals and medical centers are facing a shortage of beds, medicines and medical supplies due to the large number of cases of infection that hospitals receive on a daily basis.

In this regard, the Deputy Director of Health Education and Media at the Health Office in Taiz Governorate, Taisir Al-Samai, explained that the cholera epidemic is one of the health problems facing the Yemeni people and Taiz Governorate in particular for ten years.

Al-Samai added in a statement to Yemen Youth Channel that the cholera epidemic began in Taiz Governorate in 2016 and is still rampant, despite efforts to contain this disease.

He pointed out that Taiz Governorate has recently recorded a significant increase in the number of infections with this epidemic, as the number reached about 7,500 infections and 48 deaths, stressing that this number is considered a large number, especially in recent weeks.

He pointed out that the severity of the epidemic has increased in recent weeks, calling on citizens to take precautionary measures to prevent this epidemic, such as sterilizing water, washing hands, vegetables, and other measures.

Al-Samai stressed that our weapon today to confront this epidemic is prevention, and he said: “We are counting on the awareness of citizens to confront this disaster that is sweeping Taiz Governorate.”

He stressed the need to enhance cooperation and coordination with various official and popular bodies and organizations to confront this epidemic, stressing that under the current circumstances it is very difficult for one party to confront this epidemic alone.

The Deputy Director General of Health Education and Media pointed out that great efforts have been made over the past years to confront the cholera epidemic, whether in the field of prevention, awareness, education, sending health and awareness messages, or treatment efforts.

He stressed that these efforts remain limited compared to the extent of the spread of the epidemic, stressing that the situation requires a full return of state institutions, pointing to the deficit facing the governorate in health facilities and health personnel.

Al-Samai said, there is a deficit estimated at about 50 percent in the health and nursing staff, as well as a deficit in health facilities, pointing out that the health situation today in the various governorates of the republic is a miserable situation.

He stressed that there is an urgent need for great capabilities to confront this epidemic, which is spreading rapidly, urging citizens to arm themselves with awareness to confront this epidemic, considering that the citizen is the cornerstone in confronting any pandemic or epidemic.
