IOM: More than 73 displacement sites in Marib affected by floods and storms

The International Organization for Migration announced that more than 73 displacement sites in Marib Governorate (eastern Yemen) - which hosts the largest concentration of displaced people in the country - were severely damaged due to severe weather events.
This came in a report following a field visit carried out by the organization recently to assess the achievements made by the organization’s transitional shelter program in the governorate.
The organization said that Marib Governorate, which has become a haven for families displaced by violence, is now facing new challenges, as floods and severe storms have left many families vulnerable and without adequate protection.
“More than 73 displacement sites have been severely damaged by extreme weather events, leaving many people without safe shelter and increasing the risk of disease and renewed displacement,” she added.
“Families in Marib face challenges beyond what anyone should be able to bear – war, loss of homes, and now the impact of extreme weather,” said Abdul Sattar Issouf, IOM Yemen Chief of Mission.
“These shelters give families a chance to regain stability, giving them a foundation to rebuild their lives in a safe and dignified space,” he added, stressing that continued support is essential to reach those who remain vulnerable to these devastating conditions.
The organization indicated that since 2021, it has established more than 5,000 transitional shelters in Marib, built with local materials that can withstand Yemen's harsh weather, and can be modified to serve various needs, such as transforming into living spaces, workshops, or kitchens.
“In addition to transitional shelters, IOM is distributing emergency shelter kits, family tents, and essential non-food items to displaced populations and host communities. This critical support addresses basic needs, such as protection from the elements and covering basic household needs, giving families the support they need to cope with displacement and hardship,” she continued.
The organization called on donors to continue providing support to meet the ongoing need for safe shelter solutions, confront the rising numbers of displaced persons and the ongoing climate challenges.
