At least nine of the 16 people who made up the crew of a Comoros-flagged oil tanker that capsized off Oman on Monday have been recovered, government and naval officials from India, which is helping in search and rescue operations, said.

The 117-meter-long oil products tanker (Prestige Falcon) was heading to the Yemeni port of Aden with a crew of 13 Indians and three Sri Lankans on board when it capsized off Oman.

An Indian Navy spokesman said on Wednesday that eight Indians and a Sri Lankan have been rescued so far.

He added, "Indian and Omani teams are conducting search and rescue operations in difficult weather conditions amid heavy waves and strong winds."

Government officials from India stated that the search for the remaining crew members is continuing in the area.

In turn, the Omani Maritime Security Center said on Wednesday that search and rescue operations successfully led to the rescue of nine crew members of the tanker, adding that rescue teams found the body of one of the crew members.
