Barcelona, led by its new coach Hansi Flick, suffered a heavy defeat against Monaco, France, by three clean goals, in a friendly match that was the Catalan team's last before the start of the Spanish League at the end of this week.

The German coach played his first home match since being appointed last May, but after strong results on his American tour, including a win over arch-rivals Real Madrid, he fell badly against Monaco.

The principality side took the lead early in the second half of Barcelona's traditional Joan Gamper Trophy opener through Lamine Camara, before Swiss Breel Embolo doubled the lead.

German international Ilkay Gundogan left the pitch after suffering a blow to the head.

Flick brought on Spain's Euro 2024 star Lamine Jamal in the second half in an attempt to equalise, but the visitors added a third through Cristian Mawesa in the 86th minute.

Barcelona, who are seeking to snatch the Spanish league title from their traditional rivals Real Madrid, will begin their domestic league campaign on Saturday against Valencia.
