Qatar Red Crescent announced, on Wednesday, the launch of a donation campaign to provide relief to those affected by the floods that hit several areas in Yemen.
The Qatar Red Crescent said in a statement that it had launched "a campaign to collect donations to implement an urgent response to the torrents and floods that have recently hit several areas in Yemen, through a set of relief interventions worth 15.5 million Qatari riyals (about 4.3 million dollars)," adding that "more than 123,000 people will benefit from this campaign."
The statement quoted Faisal Mohammed Al-Emadi, Secretary-General of the Qatar Red Crescent, as saying: “A new humanitarian disaster is taking place in Yemen, as heavy rains and floods have caused widespread destruction, resulting in the deaths of dozens and the displacement of thousands, while those affected are facing severe shortages of food, medicine and shelter.”
He added: “In light of this urgent humanitarian crisis, Qatar Red Crescent is launching a community campaign to mobilize support from charitable benefactors to provide basic needs for affected families, including food, health supplies, home renovation and construction, and non-food relief supplies.”
Al-Emadi urged "the charitable and philanthropic people in Qatar to take the initiative to extend a helping hand and stand by the Yemeni brothers, by supporting this campaign that aims to alleviate their suffering and ensure their safety."

It is noteworthy that the heavy rains and floods that have been hitting Yemen since the beginning of August have affected more than 38,000 families, equivalent to 294,000 people in 5 Yemeni governorates, and have caused extensive damage to homes, property, and public infrastructure such as schools, roads, and health facilities.
According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the human toll from the floods to date has reached 98 deaths and 600 injuries, especially those living in displacement camps. The United Nations also expects that the harsh weather in Yemen will continue until next September.
