Syrian media reported on Wednesday that dozens were killed and wounded in an Israeli bombardment of the city of Palmyra in central Syria.

The official Syrian news agency (SANA) reported that explosions were heard today, Wednesday, in the vicinity of the city of Tadmur, in Homs Governorate, resulting from an Israeli aggression that targeted residential buildings and the industrial city there.

SANA quoted a Syrian military source (whose identity was not revealed) as saying, "This afternoon, the Israeli enemy launched an air aggression from the direction of the Al-Tanf area (southeast Syria), targeting buildings in the city of Palmyra in the Syrian desert."

The source added: "The aggression resulted in the martyrdom of 36 people and the injury of more than 50 others," noting that "the aggression also caused significant material damage to the targeted buildings and the surrounding area."

For its part, the Israeli army said in a statement that it "launched a large-scale attack" in the Palmyra area of Syria, claiming that the attack "targeted operations headquarters, logistics centers, and an intelligence center used by Hezbollah forces in the area."

Since early 2011, Israel has launched hundreds of air strikes in Syria, targeting government forces, Iranian targets and Hezbollah.

The pace of Israeli attacks on Syria has increased in recent weeks, with the escalation of the Israeli war on Lebanon since September 23.

Israel has recently targeted points near the border crossings linking Syria and Lebanon, in attacks it said were aimed at preventing Hezbollah from transferring "combat equipment" from Syria to Lebanon. It has also repeatedly targeted residential buildings in a number of areas, including Damascus and Homs, especially the Qusayr area on the border with Lebanon.
