The South Korean military announced that North Korea fired a number of short-range ballistic missiles into the sea off its eastern coast on Thursday, in a move that comes shortly after the Stalinist regime celebrated its national holiday.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff in Seoul said the North Korean military "fired short-range ballistic missiles this morning at around 07:10 (22:10 GMT Wednesday) from Pyongyang towards the East Sea," also known as the Sea of Japan.

She added that the South Korean military is analyzing this new missile test and is "closely exchanging information with US and Japanese authorities while strengthening monitoring and vigilance in preparation for further" North Korean missile tests.

In Tokyo, the Japanese Ministry of Defense announced that it had detected the launch of at least one ballistic missile by the North Korean army.

Pyongyang has frequently carried out missile tests on or around September 9, the date on which the Kim dynasty annually celebrates the anniversary of the founding of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in 1948.

On September 9, 2016, North Korea conducted its fifth nuclear test.

In a speech this week marking the 76th anniversary of the regime's founding, leader Kim Jong-un said North Korea intends to bolster its nuclear arsenal "to deal with any threatening activities posed by nuclear-armed rival states."

North Korea regularly conducts weapons tests, amid rising tensions with its southern neighbor.

Relations between the two Koreas have reached their lowest point in years, and Pyongyang recently announced that it had deployed 250 ballistic missile launchers on the country's southern border.
