A recent UN report confirmed the further deterioration of the acute food insecurity situation in areas under the control of the Houthi militia in northern Yemen, last June.

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization ( FAO ) said, in a report issued on Wednesday, that the worsening food insecurity in areas under the control of the Houthi group ( SBA ) rose by 3% in June 2024 from the previous month last May.

The report added that the percentage of families suffering from severe food deprivation in Houthi areas increased by 5% last June, which indicates a worsening food insecurity crisis.

The FAO noted that the increase in food insecurity in Houthi areas "is largely due to economic and seasonal factors, the continued decline in public food aid, high food prices, in addition to the lack or loss of income/work opportunities, and the effects of the Red Sea crisis." .

On the other hand, the report explained that the food insecurity crisis in areas under the influence of the Internationally Recognized Government ( IRG ) slowed down last month, “as the percentage of families consuming insufficient food decreased to 48% in June, after it had been at an average level during the past three months.” About 53%, but it is still very high compared to Houthi areas due to high food prices and the ongoing repercussions of the economic crisis.”

The United Nations stressed the need to give priority to expanding the scope of immediate and urgent support, including emergency food and livelihood aid, in the governorates most in need.
