Currency collapse brings down the Presidency Council
Our Writers| 14 October, 2024 - 5:18 PM
Since the beginning of September until mid-October, large segments of the Yemeni people have celebrated the anniversary of the two immortal revolutions that granted them dignity and paved the way for them to walk the path of dignity, under the shadow of a democratic republican state, as aspired to and expressed by various existing political, social and professional forces.
However, these celebrations and demonstrations did not transform and translate into political, social, professional and economic organizations, and thus the impact of these manifestations, which extended throughout Yemen, was not as influential as it should have been, especially in the areas liberated from the Houthi militia.
It is truly shocking that the local currency continues to collapse and millions of young people fall into abject poverty without any movement demanding that local and central authorities address the issue or force them to leave.
It is a major crime for the internationally recognized government, at its three levels: the Leadership Council, the government, and local authorities, to stand by and watch as the entire Yemeni people fall into poverty, hunger, and humiliation, a reality that completely contradicts the contents and goals of the September and October revolutions, as if the matter does not concern them.
The most surprising thing is the silence of the people and the political and social forces, some of which are involved in structuring the government and working to disable its forces from demonstrating and rejecting this horrific collapse from which no one can escape, neither merchant nor businessman nor anyone else, in addition to the complete disappearance of the middle class and its transformation into abject poverty. As for the segment that was originally in abject poverty, they are dying daily by the dozens and hundreds at the doors of hospitals, in front of garbage cans, in homes and on the streets, and some of them have turned into criminals who hang their families and relatives.
If the popular celebrations of the September and October revolutions are not translated into political, economic and trade union institutions that work to confront the local, governmental and central authorities and pose a severe threat to the stability of officials and forces participating in the government at its various levels, then those celebrations will lose their meaning, and the tremendous political awareness of the values of the two revolutions will decline, and they will become mere celebrations similar to birthday celebrations and personal achievements, and a consumer season that constitutes a burden on the people who are suffering from hunger, poverty and disease.
The way to confront the terrible collapse of the local currency requires first stripping the legitimacy and satisfaction of the Presidential Leadership Council, whose members enjoy their voluntary trips abroad and do not pose any threat to their positions. And certainly the way to threaten them is not with weapons, but with the law and its tools such as demonstrations, sit-ins, strikes, filing lawsuits, union and professional movements, and others.
There is no longer any time to delay the popular movement against the Leadership Council government in the various governorates, and if activities are held much less than those organized on the anniversary of the September 26 Revolution, the Leadership Council will undoubtedly realize that its survival is at stake, so it will either address the problem, which is unlikely but may limit the speed of the unjustified collapse of the riyal, or prepare to leave.
