A demolition crew has taken down the 22-story Hertz Tower in Louisiana, which had been empty for four years and became a symbol of the devastation caused by Hurricanes Laura and Delta.

The Capital One financial group building was brought down after a series of explosions that sent a large cloud of dust into the sky, video footage showed.

The building has been a prominent feature of the city for more than four decades, but a series of hurricanes that swept through Louisiana in 2020 left it unusable, with its windows shattered and it badly damaged.

Hertz Investments, the owner of the building, promised more than once to repair the structure of the building after collecting the required amounts from the insurance company, as the estimated cost of repairing it amounted to $167 million. In the end, an agreement was reached between Hertz and the insurance company and they received an undisclosed amount.

The demolition cost $7 million, funded by private money that was in the city's custody, while Hertz still owns the property. The future of the site or any project that might be developed there has not been determined.

Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter described the demolition of the building as "bittersweet," as saving the building and keeping it alive proved "an extremely difficult task."

Lake Charles, where the building is located, is located on the banks of the Calcasieu River and has a population of about 80,000. It is considered the city most exposed to extreme weather in the United States.
