UN: 84% of Yemen's displaced people unable to meet their daily food needs

The United Nations said that 84% of Yemen's displaced people are unable to meet their daily food needs, stressing that "parents go hungry so their children can eat."

This came in a statement published by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees on its website, noting that families often resort to eating less expensive or smaller meals.

“One father from Hodeidah described how he was forced to ration food and make heart-wrenching decisions to ensure his children had something to eat every day,” said Marine Dean Kaidom Chai, UNHCR Representative in Yemen.

This is the harsh reality for countless families across Yemen, the UN official added.

The update highlighted another issue that the commission said was often overlooked: civil documentation.

She stated that more than 51% of families have at least one child without a birth certificate, and that 70% of families have individuals without national identity cards.

These documents are not just papers, but keys to accessing basic services, education and rights, the commission said, "and without them these families face enormous barriers to receiving assistance and benefiting from opportunities."

In addition to food insecurity, the update highlighted the urgent protection needs of displaced communities. It said that almost every household has at least one vulnerable member, including women, children and people with disabilities.

The Commission called for increased humanitarian assistance to ensure that families receive the support they need to survive and rebuild their lives.
