Protests continue in Hadramout

Angry protests continued for the second day in the city of Mukalla, the capital of Hadhramaut Governorate, denouncing the collapse of electricity service and the continued power outage for long hours, reaching about 15 hours.

Local sources told Yemen Youth Net that protesters closed a number of streets in Al-Mukalla neighborhoods and burned damaged car tires on Tuesday evening in protest against the deterioration of electricity service.

The sources explained that the security services and elite forces arrested young men (without knowing their number) and fired into the air to remove the protesters from the streets they had closed, which resulted in obstructing traffic.

The General Administration of Hadhramaut Coast Electricity Corporation said yesterday evening, Monday, that the electricity system is witnessing a deterioration and an increase in the hours of power outages due to the shortage of operating fuel, which has led to the generation stations being out of readiness.

She added in a statement that the generation deficit caused problems in transmission lines and distribution networks, noting that the 132 kV electrical transmission lines coming from the central Rayyan power station to the city of Mukalla were damaged.

Hadramout Electricity Corporation stated that technical teams are working to repair faults in transmission lines (132 kV) with the aim of restarting the central Rayyan station and enhancing the generating capacity, (however, there has been no improvement in the electricity situation until Tuesday evening).
