A human rights organization expressed, on Wednesday, its deep concern over the tragic situation of detainees in the prisons of the terrorist Houthi militia, and its fears for their safety after the announcement of the death of many of them in mysterious circumstances recently.

This came in a statement by the SAM Organization for Rights and Liberties (based in Geneva) commenting on the death of the educator "Mohammed Naji Khammash" in the prisons of the Houthi security and intelligence in Sana'a.

The organization said in a statement, "Educational expert Mohammed Khammash, who was arbitrarily detained in the prisons of the Houthi security and intelligence apparatus in Sana'a, died three months after being detained in complete isolation from the outside world, as part of a campaign of arrests targeting educational experts because of their work in updating educational curricula according to methods adopted by UNICEF."

SAM quoted local and media sources as saying that Khammash's family was informed on Tuesday evening, October 22, of his death, and was asked to come and receive his body, amidst the mystery surrounding the circumstances of his death.

The sources added that "Khammash" was unable to communicate with his family throughout his detention, which reinforces suspicions that he was subjected to torture and ill-treatment.

The organization expressed its deep concern about the tragic situation of detainees in Houthi prisons, as reports showed that many of them are subjected to enforced disappearance and brutal torture in unsupervised prisons, raising serious concerns about their safety and basic rights.

SAM pointed out that the lack of communication between detainees and their families, and the loss of information about their places of detention, increases the state of ambiguity and anxiety, which requires urgent intervention to protect these victims.

The organization added that the increasing number of deaths among detainees increases concerns about the conditions of those arbitrarily detained, pointing to the death of Sabri al-Hakimi after six months of arbitrary detention in the security and intelligence detention centers, which have become the main tool for these violations.

She stressed that these practices, such as enforced disappearance and torture, constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law, and may lead to criminal prosecutions in international courts, such as the International Criminal Court.

SAM held the Houthi security and intelligence apparatus fully responsible for the practices of arbitrary detention and torture, stressing that these actions constitute a flagrant violation of international human rights laws.

The organization called on the international community to document these violations and work to hold the perpetrators accountable and bring them to justice to ensure that they are not repeated in the future, and to take immediate steps to rescue detainees in Houthi prisons, stressing that the continuation of serious human rights violations, including torture and ill-treatment, requires effective and serious pressure on the Houthis to release detainees and guarantee their human rights.
