The United Nations announced on Wednesday that 489,000 people have been displaced in Yemen since the beginning of 2024 due to "armed conflict and harsh weather conditions."
A report issued by the United Nations Population Fund office in Yemen stated that "since January 2024, about 489,545 individuals have been displaced due to armed conflict and harsh weather conditions in Yemen."
The report added that among the displaced, “93.8 percent (459,347 individuals) were severely affected or displaced by climate-related crises, while 6.2 percent (30,198 individuals) were displaced by conflict.”
“From January to September 2024, the Fund-led Rapid Response Mechanism provided life-saving emergency relief to 86.5 percent (423,451 individuals) of those registered for assistance, in 20 governorates,” the report said.
He continued: “The United Nations multi-sector rapid response mechanism, led by the United Nations Population Fund, in cooperation with the World Food Programme, UNICEF and other humanitarian partners, plays a pivotal role in addressing urgent needs arising from conflict and climate-related disasters in Yemen.”
Since the beginning of last August, the rate of rainfall has increased in several Yemeni governorates, leading to the death of about 210 people and the harm of hundreds of thousands due to floods and accompanying thunderstorms, especially those living in displacement camps.
Yemen suffers from a severe weakness in infrastructure, which has made the effects of the floods increase the tragedy of the population, who complain about the fragility of basic services due to the repercussions of a civil war that began about 10 years ago.
