The International Court of Justice announced that Chile has notified it of its request to join the genocide case filed by South Africa against Israel, due to its war on Gaza.

The court indicated in a statement issued on Friday that it had received Chile's request to join the case under the 1948 United Nations Convention on the Prevention of Genocide.

She stated that the reason for Chile's request to join was "its desire to present its views on the interpretation of the provisions of the Convention relevant to this issue."

She noted that Chile had stressed in its request that the court should take into particular account the use of statements by senior Israeli officials linked to genocide.

The Court invited South Africa and Israel to submit written opinions on Chile's declaration of accession.

Chile became the eighth country to declare its adherence to the Gaza genocide case, after Nicaragua, Colombia, Libya, Mexico, Palestine, Spain and Turkey.

For its part, Hamas welcomed Chile's request on Friday, in a statement published on Telegram.

The movement said: “We consider this step an affirmation of the humanitarian positions of the Republic of Chile, its bias towards the values of justice, and its rejection of the flagrant violations of international laws and what our people in the Gaza Strip are facing at the hands of the extremist fascist Zionist clique.”

She appreciated "the position of Chilean President Gabriel Boric, who expressed his support for the rights of the Palestinian people and their struggle to achieve their freedom and right to self-determination and the establishment of their independent state."

Hamas called on the countries of the world to “join the genocide case filed against the Zionist entity in the International Court of Justice, and to escalate all forms of pressure on it to stop its brutal war against our Palestinian people, and prevent its leaders from escaping punishment for their crimes against humanity.”

In late December 2023, South Africa filed a lawsuit against Israel before the International Court of Justice on the grounds that it had violated the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention of Genocide.

It requested the International Court of Justice to decide on precautionary measures in view of the seriousness of the situation in Gaza, and hearings on the request for precautionary measures were held in The Hague on January 11 and 12.

With American support, Israel has been waging a devastating war on Gaza since October 7, leaving more than 136,000 Palestinian martyrs and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 10,000 missing, amid massive destruction and deadly famine.

In contempt of the international community, Israel continues this war, ignoring the UN Security Council resolution to stop it immediately, and the International Court of Justice’s orders to take measures to prevent acts of genocide and to improve the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza.
