US President-elect Donald Trump on Friday appointed Carolyn Leavitt, 27, as White House press secretary. She will be the youngest person ever to hold the coveted position.
Who is Caroline Levitt?
Caroline Levitt was born on August 24, 1997 in New Hampshire, in the northeastern United States of America. She grew up in a family that ran small businesses, as she worked at an early age in an ice cream shop owned by her family in the city of Atkinson. She is married and has a child named Nicholas.
Levitt attended Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and then attended Saint Anselm College, earning a bachelor's degree in politics and communications in 2019.
While in college, Levitt was active in college and had the opportunity to work during the 2016 election at Fox News, meeting several presidential candidates on campus, which she says gave her her first window into the world of journalism.
Levitt also founded the St. Anselm Radio Club, volunteered at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics, and worked for a local television station in her home state producing documentaries.
Practical experience
In 2018, Carolyn Leavitt applied for a job at the White House, was accepted after graduating from college, and began working as a presidential writer. During President Donald Trump's first term, Leavitt worked as an assistant to then-White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany.
“I helped McEnany prepare for press briefings, fought against biased media, and proudly helped deliver President Trump’s America First agenda that lifted up forgotten citizens,” Levitt said in a statement.
After her tenure in the White House, Levitt became communications director for US Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, whom Trump nominated in 2024 to be US ambassador to the United Nations.
In the 2022 congressional primary, Levitt won the Republican nomination for New Hampshire, but lost in the general election to Democratic challenger Chris Pappas.
During her campaign, she pledged to cut taxes and advocate "free-market, pro-growth" policies, and presented herself as pro-law enforcement and anti-illegal immigration.
Trump chose her to be the spokeswoman for his 2024 election campaign, in which he defeated his Democratic rival Kamala Harris.
her return to the white house
On November 15, 2024, Trump announced the nomination of Carolyn Leavitt to serve as White House Press Secretary, making her the youngest person to hold the position in U.S. history.
"Caroline is smart, tough, and has proven herself to be a very effective communicator," Trump said in a statement, noting that she has done an exceptional job as his campaign spokeswoman.
"I have absolute confidence that she will excel in her new role and help us deliver our message to the American people to restore America's glory and greatness," Trump added.
For her part, Levitt said in a tweet on the X platform, "Thank you, President Trump, for your trust in me. I feel humbled and honored. Let us restore the glory and greatness of America."
