Journalists Syndicate and Saba University
The Yemeni Journalists Syndicate welcomed the work of the University of Saba Region in Ma'rib Governorate in integrating the occupational safety curriculum for journalists into the curricula of the Media Department, as the first Yemeni university to take this step that will benefit media students.
In a statement, the Journalists Syndicate praised the efforts and cooperation of the President of Saba University, Professor Dr. Muhammad Hamoud Al-Qudsi, the Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities, Dr. Nasser Aram, the Center for Quality and Academic Development at the University, and the Assistant Professor in the Department of Media and Arts, Sultan Al-Kharaz, for their awareness of the importance of integrating the occupational safety curriculum into the curriculum.
Dr. Nasser Ali Nasser Aram, Professor of Journalism and Publishing and Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Saba University, said that including the course on occupational safety for journalists in the curriculum for students of the Department of Media and Arts comes from a belief in its importance for students to acquire the skills and knowledge that enable them to maintain their personal safety upon graduation and joining the journalistic work, especially in a war zone that witnesses the targeting, kidnapping, harassment and threats of journalists, and even murder, as happened with journalist Abdullah Al-Qadri.
For his part, the Secretary-General of the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate, Mohammed Shabita, praised this step, stressing that media students in Yemen are in dire need of it, especially in countries witnessing conflicts and wars.
Shabita called for paying attention to this issue and completing the procedures for integrating the occupational safety curriculum into the curricula of media students in various Yemeni universities.
For his part, Dr. Sultan Al-Kharraz, Professor of the Occupational Safety Course, confirmed in a special statement that teaching this course will enable students to acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to confront the difficulties they may encounter after graduation, especially in light of the challenges facing journalists in Yemen and the region.
He added that targeting, arresting, harassing and even killing journalists has made occupational safety essential to train students on how to maintain their safety and deal with potential risks during their journalistic work.
The Yemeni Journalists Syndicate, in cooperation with the International Federation of Journalists and UNESCO, has long worked to spread the culture of occupational safety among journalists and media students.
Pointing out that a workshop was organized in Cairo last year with the participation of heads of departments and professors of journalism and media from eight Yemeni universities on presenting the model curriculum for the safety of journalists to students of media colleges, which was developed under the supervision of UNESCO and the International Federation of Journalists.
