Despite the great disaster that befell the displaced people in Marib camps, due to the torrents and floods that hit the governorate in the past few days, humanitarian aid to relieve those affected is proceeding very slowly, despite the passage of more than a week since the disaster that struck about 111 sites for the displaced.

Humanitarian interventions amounted to only 12% of the total needs necessary to provide relief to the displaced people affected by the floods, who are living in extremely difficult humanitarian conditions, according to the report of the Displaced Persons Unit published on Sunday, August 18.

Hundreds of displaced people are still living in the open without shelter or food. Those affected complain about the failure of organizations to provide them with relief days after floods swept through their camps, causing human and property losses.

"Yemeni Youth Net" listened to the testimonies of a number of displaced victims, who spoke about their exposure to painful and harsh events, and pointed to "human neglect" in helping them and appealed for help.

Displaced people in Marib: homeless families

Mubarak Abdul Qader, a displaced person in Jaw al-Naseem camp, told Yemen Youth Net, “We have been under the trees for three days without shelter or food. There are only hot meals distributed by charitable organizations from time to time.”

Mubarak points with his hand to the remains of a tent (shabakiya) for the displaced, and says, “This was the home of three families who were swept away by the floods, including those without shelter or food.” He adds, “When the storm happened, the tent fell on his brother’s family, injuring two girls who are now in the hospital receiving treatment.”

He said: “My children and I lived in the open for four days after our tent was swept away, and then we got a tent as shelter. As for food, we depend on the meals distributed by the Executive Unit for the displaced in the governorate, and they are not enough.”

He called on the international community and international organizations to quickly support and provide emergency food and shelter supplies to those affected, as thousands of displaced people are now homeless due to damage to their homes.

104 local organizations have submitted a distress call to address the effects of the catastrophic situation caused by heavy rains, floods, and destructive torrents that hit many areas in Yemen. They called on Yemeni businessmen at home and abroad, and all institutions, companies, and the private sector, to provide urgent assistance and relief to those affected.

She called on all UN agencies, bodies and international organizations to mobilize more support and assistance to support the victims and mitigate the effects of this disaster, especially in displacement camps, and called on the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen, Mr. Julien Harneis, to request urgent funding to respond to the disaster.

Despite the humanitarian disaster, the great damage and the appeals, most of those affected by the floods are still in a humanitarian crisis and the suffering of the displaced continues, if sustainable shelter is not provided that preserves their dignity and protects them from the fluctuations of weather and climate, after about 10 years of displacement and harsh conditions.
