For his part, the Russian Foreign Minister stressed the strength of Russian-Yemeni relations and his country's keenness to enhance areas of bilateral cooperation between the two countries in various fields.

The two sides agreed to enhance and develop bilateral cooperation in the scientific, technical, cultural, energy, agricultural and fisheries fields, and to hold the joint committee between the two countries next month, which was agreed to be formed during the visit of Prime Minister Dr. Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak to Moscow last February.

The Russian Foreign Minister pointed out that Russia has decided to increase the number of scholarships for Yemeni students to study in Russia in various fields and specializations.

Following the talks, a press conference was held by the two ministers, during which they spoke about bilateral relations, issues and common positions related to developments and updates in the situation in Yemen and the region.

“We agreed to resume the work of the Intergovernmental Commission for Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation,” Lavrov said at the press conference, adding: “A meeting of the co-chairs (chairmen of the Russian-Yemeni Intergovernmental Commission for Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation) is scheduled for the second half of September in Moscow, and we hope that a full plenary session of this important intergovernmental body will be held before the end of the year.”

For his part, Al-Zindani said: “Russia is a pivotal country in international politics and has a role in all events that concern peaceful security in general,” adding: “Russia has good and balanced relations in the region and we hope that it will have a role in ending the escalation.”

In another context, Lavrov stressed that "Moscow welcomes the resumption of mediation efforts by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Sultanate of Oman, the United Arab Emirates, and of course the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Hans Grundberg, with the aim of returning the situation in Yemen to its political and diplomatic track."

Lavrov considered that the attacks launched by a group on ships in the Red Sea constitute a "serious threat" to the safety of global shipping, but he stressed at the same time that "Russia does not support the decision of Western countries to respond militarily to the actions of the Houthis, as it exacerbates the situation in Yemen."
