The Gulf Cooperation Council countries and the European Union countries affirmed their full support for a comprehensive peaceful political process in Yemen under the auspices of the United Nations in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2216.
This came in the final statement of the Gulf-European summit held on Wednesday in the Belgian capital, Brussels, according to the Yemeni News Agency (Saba).
According to the agency, the summit affirmed its commitment to ensuring freedom of navigation and maritime security in the Red Sea, which is of fundamental importance to the freedom of global trade and the movement of basic goods, including the delivery of humanitarian aid to the people of Yemen, and safe passage through these shipping lanes.
The GCC countries and the European Union expressed their deep concern over the threat to security and navigation, calling on the terrorist Houthi militia to stop its attacks on ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, and to avoid any further escalatory measures that threaten global security and stability.
The statement welcomed the efforts made to contain any environmental impacts following the terrorist attacks launched by the Houthis on the Greek oil tanker "Sunion".
The GCC and EU countries called on the Houthi militias to immediately and unconditionally release humanitarian workers, UN staff and local diplomats who are being held by the Houthi militias, hampering the international community's ability to help millions of Yemenis.
The GCC countries and the European Union countries praised the efforts made by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Sultanate of Oman and the United Nations to reach a comprehensive, inclusive and sustainable political solution.
Yemeni welcome
For its part, the Yemeni Foreign Ministry welcomed, in a statement, what was included in the final statement of the Gulf-European summit on the Yemeni issue in its first session.
