US official: China rejects US calls for cooperation in confronting Houthi attacks on international shipping

China has rejected U.S. calls for joint international action against Houthi attacks on international shipping, encouraging the rebel group to attack other countries' ships rather than its own, a senior U.S. diplomat said.
US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell said Beijing's response - which has a naval base in Djibouti, across the Bab al-Mandab Strait from Yemen - was "completely unhelpful" and raised questions about its commitment to global cooperation.
When Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen began missile attacks on Western shipping late last year, it caused a crisis in international shipping, affecting China as well as many other trading countries.
