Guterres: Committed to supporting the government
In this regard, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, affirmed on Friday the international organization’s commitment to supporting the Presidential Leadership Council and the government, mobilizing the necessary resources to alleviate human suffering, and harnessing all efforts to resume the political process and enable the Yemenis to build their state based on partnership, justice, and respect for human rights.
This came during a meeting with the Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad Al-Alimi and the council members (Al-Zubaidi and Majali) in New York, in the presence of the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Acting Emergency Relief Coordinator Joyce Msuya, and the UN envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg, according to the official Saba Agency.
In the meeting, which discussed peace efforts and the humanitarian and economic crisis in the country, the President of the Presidential Leadership Council praised the role of the United Nations and its Secretary-General, and their appreciated efforts to reduce the repercussions of the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, which was exacerbated by the terrorist Houthi militia attacks on oil facilities and international shipping lines.
Al-Alimi also addressed the Houthi militias’ violations of human rights, and ways to push them to release the UN staff and the humanitarian and civil society community without any conditions.
