President Rashad Al-Alimi discussed, in separate meetings with the UN and US envoys and international officials, the peace efforts in Yemen, which were overthrown by the terrorist Houthi militia, with the support of the Iranian regime.
The Yemeni News Agency (Saba) reported that President Al-Alimi received the UN Special Envoy, Hans Grundberg, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meetings that began on Tuesday.
She added that President Al-Alimi listened to a briefing from the UN envoy on the results of his recent contacts to reduce the escalation and push towards reviving the political process that was overthrown by the terrorist Houthi militias with the support of the Iranian regime.
The President of the Presidential Leadership Council, on his behalf, the members of the Council, and the government, renewed full support for the efforts of the United Nations to launch a comprehensive political process in accordance with the references agreed upon nationally, regionally, and internationally, and in particular Resolution 2216.
He stressed the importance of keeping local, regional and international attention focused on the practices of the Houthi militias, including their gross violations of human rights, referring in this context to the campaigns of repression, abuse and kidnapping that have affected many activists, UN staff, relief agencies and the humanitarian community in Yemen.
In another meeting, President Al-Alimi, along with council members Aidarous Al-Zubaidi and Sheikh Othman Majali, held a multilateral international meeting that included the US Special Envoy to Yemen, Tim Lenderking, and high-level officials from Britain, France, Australia, the European Union, Germany, the Netherlands, and Japan.
The meeting reviewed and discussed the latest developments in the Yemeni situation, and the pressures required from the international community and major powers to push the Houthi militias to seriously engage with regional and international mediation efforts to reduce escalation and launch a comprehensive political process under the auspices of the United Nations.
The meeting also discussed - according to the official agency - the path of economic, service and institutional reforms led by the Presidential Leadership Council and the government, and ways to respond to support them as an optimal option to enhance the chances of peace, alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people and limit the catastrophic humanitarian repercussions of the Houthi terrorist attacks on oil facilities and international shipping lines.
