During the last 48 hours, the Algerian Civil Protection Services counted 73 fires in many states, without recording any casualties, as of yesterday, Sunday.

The last fire that was extinguished today was in the Beni Aziz region of Setif province, east of the country, and destroyed agricultural crops.

On Saturday, at least 10 fires broke out in the provinces of Oum El Bouaghi, Bejaia, Tizi Ouzou, Bordj Bou Arreridj, Mila, Setif, Skikda and Biskra, where forests, jungles, agricultural crops and palm oases were damaged.

In some states, firefighting aircraft were used to combat fires with the heat wave the country is witnessing.

In recent years, Algeria has witnessed fires affecting forests and agricultural lands.

July last year witnessed the outbreak of about 100 fires in more than 15 states in Algeria, especially in Bouira, Jijel and Bejaia, areas that were already damaged in 2021 and 2022 due to serious fires, which killed about 130 people, according to Agence France-Presse.

At that time, the Public Prosecutor in Bejaia ordered the opening of preliminary investigations to determine the causes of the fires and identify the perpetrators.

In April of last year, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced that his country had purchased 6 aircraft specialized in firefighting operations.
