A local official in Taiz Governorate said that about 910 cancer cases have been detected in the governorate since the beginning of this year.
The German News Agency (DPA) quoted the media official in the Taiz Health Office, Tayseer Al-Samai, as saying, "The health authorities have monitored 910 cases of cancer in the most populous governorate in Yemen since the beginning of this year, including 290 cases of breast cancer, which constitute nearly a third of the cases."
Al-Samai explained that “cancer is one of the diseases of our time, but the difficult conditions in Yemen, such as malnutrition, weak health sectors, and lack of public awareness, are among the most prominent causes of the disease.”
Al-Samai attributed the spread of breast cancer to the lack of early diagnosis and treatment by those infected and ignorance of the nature of the disease, in addition to other factors related to the lack of citizens’ capabilities to care for their health and conduct periodic examinations, and the distance of specialized health centers.
Al-Samai called on all citizens, both male and female, to interact positively with the pink campaign to prevent breast cancer, which is being implemented by the National Cancer Control Foundation in the governorate during the month of October, and to be keen to conduct periodic examinations to reduce the risks of this disease, which can be cured if the patient is cared for early.
