The Kuwaiti Al-Najat Charitable Society announced, on Thursday, that it would provide urgent aid estimated at 165 thousand US dollars to those affected by the floods that swept through the governorates of western Yemen.

This came according to statements made to the official Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) by the Head of the Resources, Public Relations and Media Sector at the Association (non-governmental), Abdullah Al-Shahab.

Al-Shahab said that the association will provide urgent aid estimated at 50,000 Kuwaiti dinars (about 165,000 US dollars) to those affected by the floods in Yemen.

He explained that this comes as a "continuation of the humanitarian and relief efforts undertaken by the association in various countries, especially sister countries in light of crises and disasters."

He pointed out that the aid includes "urgent food and shelter supplies to help a thousand Yemeni families affected by the recent floods that hit a number of governorates."

Among the aid, according to Al-Shihab, are “1,000 food baskets, a set of shelter supplies, including 250 tents, blankets and mattresses, and 250 tanks of potable water.”

Earlier on Thursday, under the title “Urgent distress call,” the Yemeni Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation called on “all international and regional partners, including countries, financial institutions, international and humanitarian organizations, to support the Yemeni government in confronting the damage caused by the low pressure system currently hitting the Hajjah and Hodeidah governorates (west).”

The ministry explained, in a statement, that "the depression caused floods and torrents that caused severe damage to infrastructure and public and private property," warning that the torrents "threaten the lives of residents and expose their property to danger, which requires comprehensive and urgent intervention to address the repercussions of the floods and alleviate the suffering of those affected."

The heavy rains that fell on the governorates of Hodeidah, Raymah and Al Mahwit caused the death and injury of dozens, the destruction and damage of thousands of homes, farms and properties, and the displacement and homelessness of thousands of families, according to the United Nations Population Fund.

Yemen suffers from severe weakness in infrastructure, which has made the effects of floods increase the tragedy of the population, who complain about the fragility of basic services due to the repercussions of a civil war that began 10 years ago.
