Government report: 1,759 displaced families in Hadramout, Shabwa and Abyan affected by heavy rains and floods

A recent government report revealed that 1,759 displaced families were affected in three governorates in southern and eastern Yemen during the past week.

The Executive Unit for the Management of Displaced Persons Camps said in initial reports that a total of 1,759 families were affected by the rains and floods that swept through a number of displacement camps and sites in the governorates of Hadhramaut, Shabwa and Abyan during the period between August 13 and 22.

The Executive Unit explained that the number of affected families in Abyan Governorate reached 1,283 families, in displacement camps in the districts of Khanfar, Zinjibar, Mudiyah and Ahwar.

In Shabwa Governorate, 254 displaced families were affected in displacement sites in the areas of Asilan, Ataq and Armah, according to the report.

The Executive Unit stated that heavy rains caused damage to 222 displaced families in the IDP camps in the districts of Al-Abr, Al-Sum, Al-Mukalla, Al-Raydah and Qusayr in Hadhramaut Governorate.

The Executive Unit called on humanitarian partners to urgently intervene to provide relief to affected displaced families by providing emergency shelters, non-food items, and food supplies, and the need for the international community to provide assistance to the recognized government in the field of confronting the effects of climate change, building the capacity of the competent authorities, and creating permanent and effective mechanisms to confront such cases.
