Fouad Abbas, a seller of mashaqir in Taiz
Yemeni activists mourned the famous seller of mashaqir in the city of Taiz, Hajj Fouad Ghaleb Abbas, who passed away after five decades of working as a seller of mashaqir and basil in the middle of the city.
Yesterday, Friday, death took Fouad Abbas after five decades of working in selling mashaqir, leaving a void and pain among his customers, leaving behind nine children, whom he was keen to feed with a lawful morsel from the sweat of his brow, by selling mashaqir and basil, in the Hasab area in the middle of the city.
Social media activists circulated photos and video clips of Hajj Fouad Abbas, while he was working in selling mashaqir and basil, in one of the neighborhoods in the center of Taiz city, calling for the need to take care of his children so that they can live with dignity after losing their only breadwinner.
The activists reviewed the virtues that Hajj Fouad Abbas continued to enjoy during his work period, through his good morals, serving his customers, and providing the best types of mashqar and basil to his customers, which created a state of emptiness among them after they received the news of his death.
They pointed out that Hajj Fouad used to walk about seven kilometers daily from his hometown in Jabal Habashi District to the “Hasab” area, to sell the crops he grew himself as his only source of income, despite the deteriorating economic situation.
Their father was righteous.
In this regard, Dr. Khadija Abdulmalik Al-Hadabi, an academic at Taiz University, commented on the death of the seller of the mashaqir, saying: “He tried to make his nine children live in dignity, and it is enough for him that he struggled, and perhaps the lawful livelihood that he struggled for will guarantee this life for his children (and their father was righteous).”
She added on her Facebook page, "I ask God to provide them with a generous benefactor who will provide for his children. May God have mercy on Hajj Fouad Ghaleb Abbas and protect the hearts of his loved ones." She wondered, "I think: How do people like them do in this terrible economic situation?"
For his part, activist Abdulaziz Al-Yousfi said, “The seller of mashaqer was the only source of income for his family. He struggled to survive in order to support his family, and this is the case for many families due to the deterioration of conditions, the loss of many jobs, and the rise in prices.”
He added: "Many families are struggling to survive. May God have mercy on the seller of mashaqir and grant him a place in His spacious heavens, and may God restore security and stability to our country."
For his part, activist Osama Al-Jamra was surprised by the neglect with which the seller of mashaqir was met, and said: “Because he is a poor mashaqir seller who died and no one mentioned him or offered condolences to his family.”
He added: "May God have mercy on you, Hajj Fouad Ghaleb Abbas. He died after suffering and struggling with life for a living. He used to bring the mashaqir from Jabal Habashi to sell them on Al-Hasab Street in Taiz."
He stressed that "if he was an official (...) social media sites would have been filled with prayers for mercy on him and praise for him after his death," as he described it.
Osama concluded his post with the hashtag: “#The seller of the mischief makers is dead, but the sellers of the homeland remain.”
