House of Representatives under Houthi control Sana'a

Informed sources in Sana'a revealed that the Houthi militia is making efforts to make amendments to the Judicial Authority Law that would allow it to appoint judges from outside the judiciary.

The Houthi-run Saba News Agency said that the (expired) House of Representatives, which is under its control, began discussing amendments to the Judiciary Law on Tuesday.

According to a document obtained by "Yemeni Youth Net", the militia is seeking to make amendments that allow the head of the militia authority, "Al-Mashat", to appoint judges who do not hold any certificate, but only obtain a recommendation from the militia leadership under the name of jurists known for their good conduct.

The amendments state that the law gives the judge appointed by the militia the power to prevent any lawyer from pleading for three years in all courts if he presents a plea that does not suit the militia’s wishes.

Lawyers considered the Houthi amendments to the Judicial Authority Law as an “insult to the entire judicial system and does not only affect them as lawyers.”

Lawyers called on "civil society and legal professionals to confront such chaos that undermines the civil state, seeks to confiscate rights, and violates the constitution, laws, and legislations that Yemenis have agreed upon."

It is noteworthy that the Houthi militia seeks to make legal amendments during the coming period in various state agencies, which will contribute to increasing its influence and excluding its political opponents.
