The Yemeni Bar Association announced, on Wednesday, its categorical rejection of any Houthi amendments targeting the independence of the judiciary, one day after the militia submitted draft amendments to the Judicial Authority Law of the Republic of Yemen, allowing it to appoint judges from outside the judiciary.
The union confirmed in a statement, a copy of which was obtained by "Yemeni Youth Net", its "categorical and clear rejection of any infringement on the independence of the judiciary, which represents the fortress of rights and freedoms, which is manifested by the cancellation of the condition of a university qualification and a qualification from the Judicial Institute for those who ascend the judiciary platform."
The union's statement indicated that the Houthi amendments "aimed to replace the university qualification and the Judicial Institute with irregular standards called Sharia scholars who hold degrees in jurisprudence and judiciary and are known for their competence and integrity."
The union reiterated its categorical rejection of the Houthi amendments project, stressing that "these amendments carry within them a direct targeting with the aim of undermining the legal profession by giving the right to the courts to place lawyers on the list of those prohibited from pleading before them for a period of no less than three years, based on flimsy allegations."
The union also renewed its "categorical rejection and clear position against the Houthi draft amendments to the Judicial Authority Law," calling on "all lawyers and members of the judiciary to stand together to confront these amendments."
She also called on "the Arab Lawyers Union and all civil society organizations to stand with her and support her position against these Houthi amendments."
The union described the Houthi decision as a "catastrophic project", stressing that the timing of its release at this time aims to tear apart national unity, deepen the concepts of legislative separation on the ground, and work to divide the national ranks.
She stressed that these amendments reflect individual desires to subjugate the judiciary and transform it from an independent body to a body affiliated with the executive authority, stressing that these amendments constitute a flagrant violation of the principles of separation of powers and independence of the judiciary.
Earlier today, the Yemeni Judges Club announced its rejection of the Houthi amendments to the Judicial Authority Law, considering the Houthi amendments a coup against the judiciary and an attempt to restore the Imamate judicial system.
