The Governor of the Central Bank of Yemen, Ahmed Ghaleb, said on Thursday that the country lost more than $6 billion of its own resources as a result of the halt in oil and gas exports due to attacks by the terrorist Houthi militias.

This came during his participation, along with Finance Minister Salem bin Braik, in the meeting of central bank governors and finance ministers in the Middle East, North Africa and Pakistan on the sidelines of the 2024 annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank held in Washington, according to the official website of the Central Bank.

During the meeting, Governor Ghaleb addressed the unprecedented humanitarian crisis that Yemen is experiencing due to the war that is approaching its tenth year and due to the unfavorable regional and international developments and their repercussions on the region and the world, including the Republic of Yemen.

He stated that the Republic of Yemen lost more than six billion dollars of its own resources during the past thirty months alone as a result of the halt in oil and gas exports due to terrorist militia attacks on oil ports and tankers, in addition to targeting international navigation in the Red Sea.

He explained that this doubled the costs of transportation and insurance and disrupted supply chains, which led to increased suffering of the people, a rapid deterioration in conditions, food insecurity, the inability to provide basic services, and increased poverty rates to exceed 80%.

In his speech, the Governor of the Central Bank of Yemen called for the need to provide urgent support to Yemen and to benefit from the financing programs provided by the Fund to countries experiencing similar crises and the most fragile countries.
