The Jordanian Ministry of Interior announced that a Jordanian driver opened fire at the Allenby Bridge (King Hussein Bridge as it is called in Jordan and Karameh Crossing as it is called on the Palestinian side), killing 3 Israelis and the perpetrator of the operation, whose body Amman is coordinating to receive.

The ministry said in a statement that "initial investigations into the shooting incident on the other side of King Hussein Bridge confirmed that the shooter was a Jordanian citizen named Maher Diab Hussein Al-Jazi, a resident of the Al-Hussainiya area in Ma'an Governorate" south of Amman.

She stressed that "the incident was an individual act and that investigations are ongoing to reach all the details of the incident," noting that "coordination is underway between the relevant authorities to receive the body of the perpetrator of the operation so that it can be buried in Jordan."

The statement explained that "all Jordanian drivers who were investigated (by the Israeli authorities) after the incident were released, and more than 100 trucks returned to Jordan in succession today (Sunday)."

The ministry did not clarify whether these trucks delivered their cargo or not. It concluded its statement by saying that the relevant authorities are also following up on the issue of closing the bridge after the incident.

On Sunday morning, 3 Israelis were killed after being seriously wounded by gunfire at the Allenby crossing linking the occupied West Bank and Jordan.

The Jordanian Interior Ministry did not address the motives behind the shooting, but it comes at a time when Israel - with broad American support - has been waging a war on the Gaza Strip since October 7, leaving more than 135,000 Palestinian martyrs and wounded, most of them children and women.

Who is Maher Aljazi?

Al-Jazi is one of the main families in the southern Badia region of Jordan, and is one of the families and clans of the Huwaitat tribes, whose population exceeds a quarter of a million Jordanian citizens.

Local platforms rushed to verify the identity, origins and roots of the Jordanian martyr. Data indicated that the martyr’s name was Maher Dhiyab Hussein Al-Jazi Al-Huwaitat, and his age was (39 years). After examining an unofficial account, he was described as a retired or discharged officer from the Royal Jordanian Police Force, and he lives with his mother in the Al-Hussainiya area near the city of Ma’an in the south of the country.

The regional index and the tribal component of the Jordanian truck driver give an extremely important political indication that shows that the tribal structure on the Jordanian side is truly prepared, with the political future of the Israeli war on the two peoples uncertain, to join the ranks of the resistance.

Jordanians rushed to social media platforms to announce their great joy over the Jordan Valley operation, and social media platforms were filled with deep meanings and messages that say that “Al-Nashmi Ibn Al-Jazi” is the grandson of the hero of the Battle of Karameh, the late prominent Jordanian General Mashhood Haditha Al-Jazi, who fought with his Jordanian forces in the “Battle of Karameh” more than half a century ago and recorded what can be described as the first Arab military victory against the Israelis.

Despite the geographical and tribal connotations of the martyr driver, the star and hero of the operation, sweets and water were distributed in the center of Hebron and Gaza City in the spirit of the “heroic Jordanian martyr,” and Palestinian platforms expanded in praising the brotherhood of blood.

With the connotations that the names of the Al-Jazi and Al-Huwaitat clans have in Jordanian memory, it can be said that the place where the operation took place carries a politically exciting symbolism linked to the Battle of Al-Karamah.

Many Jordanians vowed, via social media platforms, within a few hours, that there would be more martyrs on the road to liberating Jerusalem and Palestine. The operation had deep spatial, national and political implications, especially since it was the first carried out by a lone Jordanian resistance fighter who fell as a martyr publicly and in front of the Israeli occupation army, and was able to kill 3 soldiers at the crossing called Al-Karamah.

Platforms affiliated with the Huwaitat tribe said that the tribe's members will hold a wedding for the martyr after the official approval of his identity has been issued, which has not yet been officially announced. Meanwhile, the Hamas movement rushed to mourn the martyr and threatened Israel with more, at a time when Operation Dignity is establishing a series of very deep complications in the Jordanian-Israeli relationship and the Palestinian-Jordanian relationship as well.
