So that the Houthis do not kidnap the UN envoy

Our Writers| 1 July, 2024 - 10:34 PM

The real framework for negotiations regarding prisoners and abductees this time is between UN envoy Hans Grundberg and the Houthis, and not for the envoy to sponsor negotiations between the government and the Houthi militia.

The organizations that worked over the long years of the Houthi coup in Yemen under multiple claims under the guise of humanity and family reunification, must now adhere to the values they claimed and engage in difficult negotiations with the Houthis to liberate their employees from the Houthis who kidnapped them from their homes, the streets, and their workplaces.

It is ironic and ridiculous that Envoy Grundberg intends to organize a new round of negotiations on kidnapped persons and prisoners between the Houthis and the government, while he personally does not protect himself from kidnapping and arrest, a few days after the Houthis kidnapped a number of members of his office in Sanaa.

It is important for the envoy to work seriously to secure the safety of himself, his work, and his employees, and for the proposed negotiations to take place after two days in the Sultanate of Oman, between the envoy and the Houthis, to work on the release of the employees of his office and the employees of international and local organizations that have generously served the Houthis since 2015, because the one who lacks something does not give it. A kidnapped person or party whose crew is half kidnapped cannot work to secure the release of prisoners and kidnapped persons between the government and the Houthis.

It will be important for the Sultanate of Oman and the International Red Cross, at least so far, to work on sponsoring and organizing some kind of negotiations between the United Nations and organizations on the one hand, and between the Houthis on the other hand, in addition to negotiations between the government and the Houthis, or as an alternative to those negotiations.

It is most likely expected that Envoy Grundberg and senior employees of international and local organizations will be kidnapped and arrested in Sanaa and the Houthi-controlled areas if they do not take a decisive stand against the kidnapping of the organizations’ employees. If the envoy does not feel secure about himself, he will certainly lose his job and the privileges it carries. It amounts to tens of millions of dollars annually, with an income that cannot be dreamed of even in Sweden, his country of origin.

Before he is kidnapped and loses his job, the envoy must reject any demands for ransom to release his employees, because the ransom amount for him if he is kidnapped will be very high, and the long history of the Houthis and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard indicates that kidnapping for ransom has provided the kidnappers with huge sums of money, some amounting to tens of dollars. millions of dollars.
