In that election, Tebboune, the former prime minister, won 58.15 percent of the vote (compared to 94.65 percent in 2024), also by a large margin over his closest competitor, the Islamist Abdelkader Bengrina (17.38 percent).

Tebboune then became the tenth president of Algeria since independence from France in 1962, as 9 figures had held the presidency before him, between elected and temporary, the last of whom was Abdelkader Bensalah.

Before Tebboune, Algeria was ruled by 5 presidents: Ahmed Ben Bella (1962-1965), Houari Boumediene (1965-1978), Chadli Bendjedid (1979-1992), Liamine Zeroual (1994-1999), and Abdelaziz Bouteflika (1999-2019).

The country was also ruled by 4 interim heads of state, in difficult transitional circumstances, namely: Rabah Bitat (1978-1979), Mohamed Boudiaf (1992), Ali Kafi (1992-1994), and Abdelkader Bensalah (2019).

In 2019, despite his party, the National Liberation Front (formerly ruling), denouncing him and supporting the candidate of the National Democratic Rally, Azzedine Mihoubi, Tebboune received the support of the country’s Sufi orders and many civil society organizations, which enabled him to win with difficulty and in critical and complex political circumstances, to become the tenth president of Algeria.

In 2024, while Tebboune ran as an independent, four parties formed a coalition to support him: the National Liberation Front, the National Democratic Rally (loyalist), the Future Front (loyalist), and the National Construction Movement (Islamist).

Quick dismissal
Tebboune is described as one of the most prominent figures of the former regime, given that he held several ministries and led the government during the era of Bouteflika. However, he considers himself one of the victims of this era after his dismissal from the prime minister’s office in 2017 and the imprisonment of his son.

Tebboune was born on November 17, 1945 in the Mashria region of Naama Province (west), and graduated from the National Higher School of Administration, specializing in economics and finance.

He served the shortest term as Prime Minister in Algeria's history, as he did not exceed 90 days in office, as he was appointed in May 2017, and was dismissed in August of the same year, against the backdrop of a strong conflict with major businessmen.

This dismissal came against the backdrop of his announcement to separate money from politics, and to limit the influence of businessmen close to Bouteflika's entourage, as he then began actual procedures by opening the file of taxes and unfinished projects.
